VR 'SPACE OPERA': Mimetic Spectralism in an Immersive Starlight Audification System

چکیده
This paper describes a system designed as part of an interactive VR opera, which immerses a real-time composer and an audience (via a network) in the historical location of Göbeklitepe, in southern Turkey during an imaginary scenario set in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (8500-5500 BCE), viewed by some to be the earliest example of a temple, or observatory. In this scene music is generated, where the harmonic material is determined based on observations of light variation from pulsating stars, that would have theoretically been overhead on the 1st of October 8000 BC at 23:00 and animal calls based on the reliefs in the temple. Based on the observations of the stars V465 Per, HD 217860, 16 Lac, BG CVn and KIC 6382916, frequency collections were derived and applied to the generation of musical sound and notation sequences within a custom VR environment using a novel method incorporating spectralist techniques. Parameters controlling this resynthesis can be manipulated by the performer using a Leap Motion controller and Oculus Rift HMD, yielding both sonic and visual results in the environment. The final opera is to be viewed via Google Cardboard and delivered over the Internet. This entire process aims to pose questions about realtime composition through time distortion and invoke a sense of wonder and meaningfulness through a ritualistic experience.

A Tablet Based Immersive Architectural Design Tool
In this paper we describe a SketchUp VR system in which we create a hybrid two-dimensional / three-dimensional immersive architectural design system. This system combines a tablet PC, an optically tracked room, a display wall, a SpaceTraveler motion controller, and stereographic eyewear to allow immersive conceptual design and walkthrough using a version of SketchUp that has been enhanced with ...
متن کاملEye Mark Pointer in Immersive Projection Display
We developed a pointer in 3D virtual space, using an eye tracking system as a sensor. The eye mark pointer is installed to a virtual environment system which provides stereoscopic vision with an immersive projection display. The circular polarization stereoscopic vision enables us to use the eye tracking system in the immersive projection display. The eye tracking system obtains relative gaze d...
متن کاملAn immersive, multisensory and interactive approach for landscape study in virtual environments: the wind turbines’ case
Nowadays, where public projects are more and more committed to sustainable development, the user perception become a determinant factor for the decision-making process. This paper targets to evaluate the use of an immersive, multisensory and interactive method based on virtual reality (VR) system in order to study human behaviour and perception. Today, non-immersive, non-interactive and mono-se...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Immersive Virtual Reality Systems for Design Reviews
ABSTRACT: With the growth of building information modeling (BIM) approaches to facility design, architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has been shifting to the use of three-dimensional (3D) virtual facility mockups during design. Studies have shown that 3D models when displayed in an immersive projection display environment allow users to interact with the virtual environme...
متن کاملHigh Presence Remote Presentation in the Shared Immersive Virtual World
In this study, a remote presentation system that can be used in the shared immersive virtual world was developed. This system consists of several elemental technologies, such as the video avatar, a shared database, shared visualization tools and an i-mode interface, and can be used for both meeting-style and demonstration-style presentations. This system was applied to a presentation of collabo...
